SUMMARY

CPG GROWTH LEADERS 2021

Each year, IRI partners with the Boston Consulting Group (BCG) on the annual Growth Leaders study, which analyzes the growth performance of hundreds of public and private consumer packaged goods companies.

In 2021, CPG growth in retail channels was 2.7%, a decreased growth rate versus 2020, a year that saw accelerated growth of 10.6% due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

The report reveals the biggest growth companies for 2021 – and how they won by embracing accelerating and sustaining trends such as self-care, convenient and fresh foods, targeted indulgences and household cleaning products. This year's growth leaders also excelled at pricing, supply chain fulfillment, and omnichannel reach and execution through ongoing COVID-19 disruption.

Other key findings:

  • Compared to 2019, overall CPG volume sales grew 4.3% in 2021, showing strong CPG growth versus pre-pandemic norms.
  • Large and small CPGs took share from midsize players. Large companies used pricing actions to gain market share, while small CPGs capitalized on competitor supply constraints to expand share.
  • Branded CPG products sustained growth in 2021 by taking share from private label after both national brands and private label grew significantly in 2020.
