WHAT: During the NACDS Total Store Expo insight session “The Impact of Population Shifts on Retail and CPG in the U.S.,” IRI’s Larry Levin and Paul Lainis will dissect how American consumers are significantly different today than they were just five years ago and advise how companies can adapt business strategies and operations to address the needs and interests of the changing American consumer.
WHY: Demographic fluctuations, population migration, sustained macroeconomic weakness and changing attitudes toward health and wellness have altered consumer behavior and mindsets in the United States. The large homogenous American middle class, which drove much of the center-store grocery growth for the past decade, is no more and has fractured into small, differentiated consumer groups with vast and varied needs and desires. New groups have emerged, and the behaviors of existing groups have changed, as can be seen in the rise in Hispanic populations, attitude changes toward health in many upper-income households and high percentages of households receiving government assistance. In addition, millennials, who are digitally savvy, have different needs than baby boomers, who are entering retirement. Amidst this turbulence, companies must adapt business practices to account for the disparities across all groups and their changing consumer bases.
